John Muir described the Mendenhall glacier as "one of the most beautiful of all the coastal glaciers." It is formed from several tributary glaciers flowing from the 1,500-square-mile Juneau icefield. As two glaciers carve their way around 3,000-foot rock sentinels, smaller glaciers dramatically stream from the surrounding mountains and icefield toward the valley below.

Come with us aboard a modern turbine helicopter and experience the thrill of actually setting foot on this spectacular natural wonder.

You'll venture from wetland habitat at sea level to alpine ridges and thriving rain forest regions once covered by glacial ice. Keep a close watch for wildlife throughout your flight. Then journey beyond civilization to trace this highly active, 12-mile glacier, back to the Ice Age. As you explore this enchanting glacier realm, you'll soar over deep crevasses, past hanging glaciers and around jagged spires. For added enjoyment, your experienced pilot will highlight the unfolding panoramas through your individual headset.

Finally, as your helicopter gently touches down onto Mendenhall Glacier, you are welcomed by knowledgeable guides who will describe how glaciers form and flow to shape the landscape. You will also investigate features such as rocky moraines, aqua surface pools and moulins. This unforgettable and exciting journey is also a wonderfully educational experience.

Approximately 2 hours (flight time is 45 minutes).
