Overview
Welcome to the Team Rectifiers Final Report for
Geog 5223. The project required us to
organize data for research regarding Sanborn Maps for the ACHS to study the city
of Charlottesville, Virginia. Specifically, we were asked to set up a GIS to
accomplish the following:
- Genealogy—Create a geocoding
address of location of persons/business in historical city directories
(georeferencing)
- City Visualization—Create
thematic maps and 3D views
- Land Use Change studies—analyzing
changes in the relative proportion and distribution of land use categories
through time
This report summarizes the efforts and
considerations we took to prepare the GIS. We've divided the report into the
following:
This page gives an overview of each of these
topics and includes a link to more details.
Data Structure
In order to collect the data as efficiently and
compactly as possible, we established two feature classes and one look up table.
We put these elements into a Personal Geodatabase.

Digitizing Procedures
The digitizing consisted of georeferencing the
Sanborn maps and then digitizing the street and building features. While
digitizing the features, we also populated the databases with necessary
information. Details
Data Entry Errors
Preventing (and
correcting) data entry errors required us to pay particular attention to the
three elements we created: 1) Buildings feature class, 2) Street feature class,
and the data in the tables associated with the two feature classes and the look
up table.

Level of Effort
The level of effort is noted for:
It is important to note that the
above times are the first-time efforts of each of the team members.
Details
Error Analysis
The sources of error are in
the spatial and attribute data we compiled and we took steps to mitigate
them. However, even with the errors we could not eliminate, the result is
sufficient for the purposes of the ACHS.

Metadata Report
Two metadata reports were
generated for the feature classes in the project: One for
Buildings
and one for
Streets.

Future Mapping
With the Team Rectifier's GIS, we are now in a
position to BETTER understand the system that we must put in place to address
the ACHS requirements. That is, what we have right now would not be
sufficient to satisfy the ACHS need.

possibilities and illustrate a number of
thematic maps showing a variety of aspects of Charlottesville. Details
