Fukuoka (Hakata Bay) Japan
     Far East Cruise Port

This is the site of Japan's version of the Great Wall—a coastal barrier built to keep out the advancing Mongols. It proved unnecessary, for a kamikaze ("divine wind") sank the Mongol fleet in 1281. Hakata now boasts a thriving fishing industry, the important kyushu university, and the production of ceramic ningyo figurines popular throughout Japan.
