The Reverend John Williams, first European to visit Apia, was greeted back in 1830 by a group of smiling (and nearly naked) islanders. He later named Samoa "the Friendly Islands." Samoans are as hospitable as ever, and their islands are just as enchanting. Author Robert Louis Stevenson wandered the world over, but chose Apia as his home and last resting place

Description

Tropic-green Upolu is unmistakably a South Seas island.  Cradled along its northern shore lies the peaceful township of Apia.  Picturesque thatched-roof "fales" blend into the emerald-hued countryside.

Jagged mountains rise above deserted beaches where trade winds sigh on coconut palms.  Banana groves and bread-fruit trees gently ripen in the moist, tropical climate.  Western Samoa's friendly, carefree islanders will welcome you to their bountiful homeland and proudly show you the former home of their adopted son, Robert Louis Stevenson.

This is a contented island where traditional ways hold sway despite the passage of time.
